EXAM PROGRAMS
The ACER Scholarship Test is used by many independent and private schools across NSW to select students for academic scholarships. It is a separate pathway from the NSW Selective High School system, run directly by each school rather than the state government.
We prepare students for the ACER academic scholarship test specifically. We do not currently support music, sport, art or other specialty scholarship assessments some schools also offer.
WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT
Every school sets its own number of scholarships and its own award amounts, from 100 percent down to 50 percent or less. The scholarships on offer, and how many are awarded, vary from school to school and year to year.
A strong result on the test does not guarantee an offer. If more students qualify than there are scholarships available that year, students with a strong result can still miss out.
That is why scholarship rounds can be more competitive than selective entry in some years. Not because the test itself is harder, but because there are simply fewer places on offer.
INSIDE THE EXAM
The test format depends on which level your child sits.
Reading and Viewing
Covers comprehension and interpretation of written and visual material across a range of curriculum areas.
Mathematics
Students apply mathematical skills to solve problems, including short calculations using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Writing
Two extended responses in different genres, 20 minutes each. Assessed on the quality of content and ideas, and the structure of expression.
Written Expression
Two topics set in different styles. Assesses a student's ability to express thoughts and ideas in writing, not just correctness.
Humanities
Comprehension and interpretation of written and visual material drawn from subjects including English, Art, History, Geography and Social Studies. No specialist subject knowledge is assumed.
Mathematics and Science
Measures mathematical and scientific reasoning rather than school-based achievement. Material may differ from the standard curriculum, and the difficulty scales with year level, from Level 1 through to Level 3.

Most of our HAST and Selective families were also weighing up independent and private schools with a scholarship pathway. They kept asking whether we could help with that preparation too, alongside everything else.
HAST is also written by ACER, so preparing students for the ACER Scholarship Test was not a difficult transition for us. The question style and format were already familiar territory.
The gap was rarely just the test itself. Families would prepare hard for the exam and then be caught off guard by how much the number of scholarships on offer, and the award amount, actually mattered.
We built our Scholarship preparation around that gap. The same 1-on-1 approach we use for HAST and Selective, applied to the ACER Scholarship format, with an honest read on where a scholarship is realistic for your child.
